Dr. Krystal Tsosie, Geneticist and Bioethicist at Arizona State University in Tempe poses for a portrait with her graduate students - Kathleen Dreier Photography

In January 2024, Science News Magazine published an article on the life and work of Dr. Krystal Tsosie, an indigenous woman of the Navajo Nation, who is a Geneticist and Bioethicist at the Arizona State University in Tempe. I had the distinct honor to photograph Dr. Tsosie and learn more about her work when I sent on assignment in December of 2023. At ASU, I was able to visit with Dr. Tsosie and some of her graduate students, review their recent projects and tour their newly renovated laboratory. As a white woman, my conversation with Dr. Tsosie as I was photographing her,  I learned about my ignorance regarding the topic of Indigenous Data Sovereignty, that for decades scientific data on Indigenous people was collected and used unethically.  I encourage the viewer of this post to read the full article here of this remarkable woman and what she is doing for her community:  Geneticist Krystal Tsosie advocates for Indigenous data sovereignty.

I have been a longtime member of Social Documentary Network, an online forum for documentary photographers from around the world to post galleries of their work related to social justice topics of all kinds. With the ongoing polarization attached to the plethora of issues in the United States, the intention of the Voices of Race portrait series is to amplify perspectives, encourage civil discourse, foster understanding of our individual and collective history, and to be a call of action for all to be social change agents

Da Vinci Tree Academy Portraits

In the March 2024, I spent a delightful couple mornings taking portraits of approximately 300 elementary-aged students at a local Tucson school, Da Vinci Tree Academy. This is a small sampling of the students that I photographed.
