In the March 2024, I spent a delightful couple mornings taking portraits of approximately 300 elementary-aged students and staff at a local Tucson charter school, Da Vinci Tree Academy. This is a small sampling of the students who I had the pleasure of photographing. When I take children’s portraits, or anyone’s for that matter, it is always my intention to encourage and bring out aspects of who the person is naturally, something that hints at their personality rather than mold them into a preconceived notion of perfect posture or expression. While I may offer some guidance in standing this way or that, which I keep to a minimum, I find portraits far more intriguing when the person is expressing themselves in a way that is authentic and genuine to them.
