My dear friend, Dallas, approached me with an idea that she had to celebrate her 77th birthday (July 8th). She wanted a portrait session in desert wearing her zebra-styled clothing. The zebra, her spirit animal, symbolizes “balance, harmony, and uniqueness as well as wearing patterns of paradox for all to see.” On 07/10/24, Dallas and I went out to McCain Loop near Gates Pass on the far West side of Tucson, AZ where I knew she would have privacy to express herself. For those who know personally Dallas, I recognized immediately that I was doing what would be an iconic session that expressed the essence of who Dallas is. And oh my, the sky was off the hook in its full splendor as the sun was setting. I am hopeful that in time, Dallas will give me permission to share more images from her very powerful session.
When I’m in my 70’s, I want to be like Dallas, calling the shots of my life and honoring all the steps I took to stand in the place I reside in the moment. Women of all ages inspire me in a variety of ways. Collectively, we are moving the needle of justice, equity, and compassion forward for all people. Onward we go in our respective efforts as the work continues.
The feature image is an example of what a Soul Portrait with me can be like. Let me know if you would like more information about scheduling your own Soul Portrait session in my home studio or on location. Reach me through my Contact Page.
Here are a two additional images from Dallas’ session.

I have been a longtime member of Social Documentary Network, an online forum for documentary photographers from around the world to post galleries of their work related to social justice topics of all kinds. With the ongoing polarization attached to the plethora of issues in the United States, the intention of the Voices of Race portrait series is to amplify perspectives, encourage civil discourse, foster understanding of our individual and collective history, and to be a call of action for all to be social change agents
In the March 2024, I spent a delightful couple mornings taking portraits of approximately 300 elementary-aged students at a local Tucson school, Da Vinci Tree Academy. This is a small sampling of the students that I photographed.
